February is the month when we celebrate Carnival, a millenary tradition with costumes and fun. There are three especially important Carnivals in Costa Brava, which you must see if you are in the Empordà during this season.

Platja d’Aro*

Located in Baix Empordà, the Carnival in Platja d’Aro is arguably one of the most popular and spectacular parades in Costa Brava, with over 4,000 participants.

Roses*

Moving up from Baix Empordà to Alt Empordà, we can find the Carnival in Roses. This fishing village becomes full of cercaviles (parades), dance and parties. Friday is the most important day, with a parade along the main street, where many associations give out biscuits and garnatxa – a typical Ampurdanese wine. The parade consists of over eighty crews, seventy floats and some 3,500 participants.

Palamós*

Last but not least, let’s go back to Baix Empordà. The Carnival in Palamós is not the biggest, but it is one of the pioneers. There is a parade on Saturday afternoon, a masquerade ball in the evening, and the float exhibition on Sunday.
