Like every year around this season, the “Visit Costa Brava” blog by Porcel Advocats presents activities to do in winter in the Costa Brava. This time, we offer you a nice, accessible track to walk, run or cycle along, either by yourself or with your family – the Baby train path [La ruta del tren petit].

It is the green path that connects Palamós to Palafrugell, going through Mont-ras, Vall-llòbrega and the beaches of Castell and La Fosca. The six-kilometre path recreates the route followed by the so-called “baby train” that linked Palamós to Girona passing through La Bisbal years ago.

The story of the baby train

As explained on the official website of this well-known track, the tram’s first journey was on 23 March 1887, one hundred thirty-five years ago. The Belgian steam engine ran a few kilometres along the road.

Today, part of the railway is buried by that very road but, with some imagination, the green path allows you to go back in time and follow the route in the Empordà the train passengers used to follow years ago.

Starting point and hot tips

The route begins at the Tourism Office of Palafrugell. Once there, walk down Avinguda Espanya until you find the path that will lead you to the cleary indicated baby train track.
