At one of the highest points in the Gavarres mountain range stands the Sanctuary of Mare de Déu dels Àngels, a sacred place built in the 17 th century by the inhabitants of Sant Martí Vell, the town to which it belongs.

Consisting of a central nave and two side chapels, this architectural gem, just a few kilometres from Girona, takes you back in time. There are several access routes to this strategically located sanctuary near the city of Girona. Setting off from Girona, one of the most emblematic routes starts in Sant Pere de Galligants and goes across the picturesque valley of Sant Daniel – a unique experience. Other routes exist leaving from Quart, Llambilles, Madremanya, Juià or Celrà.

Salvador Dalí and Gala got married at the Sanctuary in 1958

Fun fact – it is worth mentioning that, on 8 August 1958, Salvador Dalí and Gala tied the knot at this location, which added a piece to the history of the sanctuary. The union of the surrealist artist and his wife and muse has consolidated even further the reputation of this place as a landmark for significant moments.
