Located in the beautiful region of Baix Empordà, la Bisbal d’Empordà is a picturesque Catalan town whose centuries-old pottery tradition, passed on through generations, has earned it a special place in the history of ceramic pottery.

Pottery has been one of the main economic activities in la Bisbal d’Empordà since the 18 th century, although there are older records.

Pottery tradition

Throughout history, la Bisbal pottery has gone through important changes, according to the growing demand of its products. The 19 th century was its golden age, when it expanded outside Catalonia.

During the 20 th century, cultural changes and the appearance of new materials challenged the pottery tradition. In spite of this, the growing tourism in the 1950s allowed some artisans to focus on decorative elements.

La Bisbal d’Empordà

Today, la Bisbal remains an outstanding, diverse centre of ceramic production, which includes elements used in construction and decoration. Pottery is the soul of this city, and it is preserved thanks to associations such as the Escola de Ceràmica (Pottery School) or the Terracotta Museum.
